Predicting fish community responses to environmental policy targets

چکیده

The European Union adopted the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in year 2000 to tackle rapid degradation of freshwater systems. However, biological, hydromorphological, and physico-chemical water quality targets are currently not met, identifying successful policy implementation management actions is key importance. We built a joint species distribution model for riverine fish Flanders (Belgium) better understand response communities current environmental goals. Environmental covariates included variables hydromorphological indices, while waterway distances accounted spatial effects. detected strong effects physico-chemistry on species’ distributions. Evaluation community responses simulated scenarios revealed that targeting ‘good’ status, following WFD, increases average richness with fraction (0.13–0.69 change accumulated occurrence probabilities). Targeting ‘very good’ however, predicted an increase 0.17–1.38 richness. These simulations indicated riverbed quality, nitrogen, conductivity levels should be focal point policy. weak together complexity nutrient-associated problems, suggest challenging future river restoration Flanders.

Adaptive responses of fish membranes to altered environmental temperature.

transport via the ASC system is important to cell function in terms of supplying precursors for intracellular glutathione biosynthesis. These observations of the temperature-sensitivity of the Na+-pump, mediated passive K+ transport and amino acid transport systems confirm the heterogeneity of behaviour of different membrane transport systems in both hibernator and non-hibernatbr membranes (Ell...

Biochemical responses of two erythrinidae fish to environmental ammonia.

The non-ionized form of ammonia is very toxic to many aquatic species. It is especially important in several aspects of fish biology. A large range of organismal strategies for coping with environmental stressors is usually observed in living organisms. Among those, the responses for managing chemical stressors are well studied. The present work compares biochemical responses of two evolutionar...

Predicting Responses to Contemporary Environmental Change Using Evolutionary Response Architectures.

Rapid environmental change currently presents a major threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem functions, and understanding impacts on individual populations is critical to creating reliable predictions and mitigation plans. One emerging tool for this goal is high-throughput sequencing technology, which can now be used to scan the genome for signs of environmental selection in any species an...

Bacterial responses to environmental herbicide pollutants (glyphosate and paraquat)

The toxic effect of herbicides on non- target microorganisms may influence degradation of organic matter resulting in changes to nutrient cycling. In the present study, different strains of bacteria incubated in media containing different concentrations of glyphosate and paraquat were assessed over a period of two incubation terms. The deleterious impact of the herbicide was observed as glyphos...
